Dr. Kapp interviewed for ModernHealthcare magazine

September 26, 2011

For the long-term acute-care hospital segment, the days of consolidation may be nearing an end as post-acute providers take on the ambitious and uncertain task of adopting the new, favored model of delivery: coordinated care.

Proof of this came in May when Louisville, Ky.-based Kindred Healthcare shareholders agreed to buy RehabCare Group for $1.3 billion in a deal that not only added to Kindred's LTAC hospital business, but also expanded the company's reach in the full post-acute continuum through added rehabilitative services.

The combination of Kindred and RehabCare will provide more opportunities for our patients, employees and other stakeholders, Kindred President and CEO Paul Diaz said in a statement to Modern Healthcare last week.  Read More >

Landmark Joplin Tornado Update

May 24, 2011

As you are all by now aware, the city of Joplin was struck by the most devastating tornado in over a century. I am happy to report that no staff were injured or killed and that the Landmark Hospital in Joplin was not damaged. I was able to survey the damage first hand during the two relief flights flown from Cape Girardeau. We took medication, fluids, food, linens, etc on the two flights.

Dennis Nicely (CEO) and Trish Shuler(CCO) are to be commended along with their staff and doctors for their tireless efforts during this emergency. The hospital had water restored last night and we hope to have electricity restored today so that we can go off generator. The staff is in good spirits and is able to cover all shifts even with the increased census of up to 35 pts in a hospital designed for 30. Unfortunately, St. Johns hospital is a total loss and had to be evacuated. We are doing everything we can to support the rescue efforts and help off load patients from Freeman hospital so that they can take acute patients.

I want to thank all of you who have helped in the support Landmark Family in Joplin, and would ask that you keep them in your prayers. I will keep you updated as to the progress of relief efforts and any additional support we may require.

Joplin Landmark Hospital Survives Blizzard

March 1, 2011

Blizzard Joplin, MOThe blizzard of February 1, 2011 was unprecedented in the experience of the Joplin healthcare community. The worst snow storm in over 20 years resulted in the mayor declaring the first city-wide emergency in the history of Joplin. Over 20 inches of snow brought everything to a halt. Everything was closed, except healthcare providers like Landmark Hospital of Joplin. Even with a high census of 28, the hospital was able to continue seamless patient care due to the very dedicated efforts of staff and leadership. Disaster preparation planning was a key element in the successful continuation of hospital operations. The hospital CEO announced a pre-disaster alert, and the hospital Incident Command System was initiated. The hospital’s status was assessed and anticipated needs addressed. For example, the routine linen delivery was not able to be made. So a driver in a 4 wheel drive vehicle was dispatched to purchase washcloths and baby wipes. A reduced bathing schedule was put in place, and bed linen changes were prioritized by need.

Another high priority was ensuring enough qualified staff was available to continue patient care. 4 wheel drive vehicles were used to bring staff to the hospital. Several members of leadership spent the night at the hospital. Several day shift nurses were housed that night in a close-by motel so they would be available to work the next day’s shift. The hospital medical director spent the night in the doctor’s lounge and continued patient care on-site for the duration of the emergency. Professional dedication by staff, and excellent clinical leadership throughout the emergency ensured the patients received the same level of care as during normal hospital operations.

Blizzard Hits Columbia; Teamwork Kicks In

February 1, 2011

The blizzard officially dumped 17.7 inches of snow at the Columbia Regional Airport, but storm spotters reported depths up to 20 inches and drifts as tall as 5 feet in the surrounding areas. Snowfall rates of 2 inches per hour with wind gusts of 35 mph created whiteout conditions and numerous road closures paralyzing Columbia. Surrounding schools, including the University of Missouri were closed, the US Postal Service pulled its carriers off routes, and I-70 was closed from KC to St. Louis; however, quality patient care continued at Landmark Hospital of Columbia. Offices were converted into a week- long extended-stay facility for many dedicated employees. The floors of the Administrative Offices were covered with air mattresses and sleeping bags for those choosing to rough it; other staff was housed at nearby motels or in empty patient rooms. The night shift employees would sleep during the day and once they were up, showered and fed, the beds were stripped and changed to make the rooms ready for the day shift employee coming off duty. The employees were fed breakfast, lunch and dinner awhile they were staying at the Hospital. Employees with 4-wheel drive vehicles assisted by picking up snow bound employees. Other staff members worked double shifts to accommodate for absences. Whatever the need was; it was met. Individual efforts from these dedicated employees will be long remembered by patients and management as well.
